SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK
Let screen time support— not replace — what matters most. Prioritize movement, sleep, and connection, and let tech fill in the gaps.
TODAY’S TOPIC
Screens & School Breaks: Finding the Right Balance During Downtime
When school lets out—whether it’s for a long weekend, spring break, or the summer—one thing usually goes up: screen time. With extra hours to fill and fewer routines in place, many teens and tweens naturally gravitate toward their devices. Whether they’re catching up with friends, gaming online, or diving deep into TikTok, screen use becomes a go-to activity when there’s “nothing else to do.”
But the real issue isn’t just about how long kids are on screens—it’s about what’s being crowded out. Is screen time cutting into sleep? Physical activity? Real-life social interaction? Is it limiting boredom-induced creativity or spontaneous play? Left unchecked, hours can slip by without much enrichment, and with so much of their social lives and interests tied to the digital world, it’s easy for screens to become the default.
The goal isn’t to eliminate screen time—far from it. Tech can offer fun, connection, and even learning. The challenge for parents is helping kids find a healthier balance during less structured days. That’s where small shifts can make a big difference.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Simple Strategies to Keep Screen Time in Check Over Breaks
Create a Rhythm, Not a Rigidity
Build a flexible daily routine with your child that leaves room for screens—but after sleep, movement, meals, and face-to-face time. Giving them a say in the plan can improve buy-in and reduce pushback.
Mix Up Digital and Real-World Activities
Balance screen time with a menu of non-digital options: invite them to try a new recipe, walk the dog, paint, journal, or help plan a family outing. If they’re stuck for ideas, keep a “boredom jar” full of low-effort offline suggestions.
Differentiate Passive vs. Purposeful Screen Use
Not all tech time is created equal. Encourage creative or skill-building use (like video editing, coding, or art) over endless scrolling. You can even help set weekly “tech challenges” together—like designing a game or creating a short film.
Define Boundaries Ahead of Time
Instead of reacting to overuse, be proactive. Set clear expectations for screen-free times (like during meals or before bed) and explain why they matter. Use built-in parental controls to help reinforce limits without needing to hover.
Keep Social Time Social
Encourage in-person hangouts or family time that doesn’t involve a screen. Remind your child that real-world interaction is just as important as digital connection—and sometimes more fulfilling.
