How Algorithms Shape Your Child's Interests
We're Safe Space Online - a newsletter about keeping kids safe in the digital world. Every issue will aim to empower parents, guardians & educators with the knowledge and tools they need to protect children from online dangers.
SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK
Be aware that algorithms often show your child more of what they’ve already seen—potentially narrowing their interests. Encourage them to explore new topics intentionally rather than just relying on recommendations.
TODAY’S TOPIC
How Algorithms Shape Your Child’s Interests
Your child’s favorite trends, videos, and online influencers might seem like their personal choices—but in many cases, they’re being nudged by invisible forces working behind the screen: algorithms.
Algorithms are a complex set of instructions used by apps and platforms to keep users engaged for as long as possible. These systems analyze what your child watches, clicks, likes, and even hovers over, then show more content just like it. The longer your child stays engaged, the more data they generate.
Whether your child is watching YouTube, scrolling TikTok, using Instagram, or playing games online, algorithms are working behind the scenes to decide what content they see next. These automated systems are designed to learn what grabs their attention and serve more of it—fast. While this can help tailor content to your child’s interests, it can also create unintended consequences, such as tunnel vision, exposure to risky material, or even harmful behaviors.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You can’t out-code an algorithm, but you can educate your child and take steps to reduce the risks. Here are some helpful actions:
1. Explain How Algorithms Work
Kids often don’t realize their “For You” or “Recommended” feeds aren’t random. Help them understand that:
Content is chosen for them, not by them.
What they click on (even once!) can affect what they see for weeks.
Time spent = more data shared = more targeted content.
2. Watch and Explore Together
Every so often, ask your child to show you what they’re seeing in their feed. Let them walk you through what interests them, and take time to observe:
Are the videos positive or negative in tone?
Are they seeing the same types of content over and over?
Are there themes that could be mentally or emotionally harmful?
Be curious—not judgmental. It opens the door to better communication.
3. Encourage Variety and Intentionality
Help your child break the algorithmic loop by:
Subscribing to a wide variety of creators
Manually searching for new topics they might enjoy
Taking regular breaks from algorithm-heavy platforms (like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Instagram Reels)
Apps like YouTube even allow you to pause your watch history to stop the algorithm from adjusting to every single view.
4. Review Platform Settings Together
Most platforms have limited parental controls or account management features. Make it a habit to:
Turn off autoplay when possible
Set time limits for high-engagement apps
Use “restricted mode” or equivalent safety filters where available
For example, YouTube’s “Restricted Mode” helps filter out mature content, and TikTok’s Family Pairing allows parents to link their child’s account to manage screen time and content.
Your child’s interests will change over time—but let’s make sure they are the ones steering that journey, not a faceless algorithm.

▶ Slang Word of the Week: “Kevin” - An individual who consistently displays a lack of intelligence through social incompetence or poor decision-making. This use of “Kevin” emerged on platforms like TikTok and is associated with the slang term “so Kevin.”
